Media architecture is a new discipline within design and architecture that gives architecture a new communicative dimension by integrating digital media. Through the exchange of communicated contents, medialised architecture has the possibility to change the appearance of your environment.

Our research in Media Architecture
The interaction of digital media gives added value to the interaction between man and space and serves to transfer emotional and content-related messages. Space interacts with the world around it: artificial light adapts itself to daylight and the well-being of the individual, facades and surfaces change their form as needed, the control of spatial objects and medial surfaces is integrated into the organism of a building, materials turn “intelligent” and can be modelled – by manufacturing processes like CNC-milling – to fit the needs of the project. Spatial atmosphere, materials and the use of surfaces as places for communication are part of the core competences of interior architecture. Within our research work in Media Architecture, we´re working on the integration of digital media into architecture.

  • CORNEA TI/ Impressions

    CORNEA TI/ morphing light to space

    CORNEA TI is the transformation of light, shape and sound in space. Letters transform into each other and morph into an illuminated anagram. For this purpose, three containers on a container boat form an interactive stage. But only from the perspective of the audience visitors can experience the installation in its entirety: the transformation of light and form through music – visual music.

    CORNEA TI is built as huge furniture out of 600sqm sewn synthetic leather based on a wooden structure and cushioned with foam. Between every sectioning plane there is a motion detector to measure the position of the visitors and  the attendance. 1600 leds are controlled by a computer. They visualize the music of the musicians and the movements of the visitors. The interactive sound is based on the transformation of letters. Musicians can use CORNEA TI as an interactive stage for immersive music events.

    CORNEA TI is a project of Bachelor Interior Architecture of University of Applied Sience Mainz, supervised by Prof. Klaus Teltenkötter.  It is developed fort he lighting event Luminale in Frankfurt Germany in cooperation with Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, Ensemble Modern Frankfurt and International Ensemble Modern Academy.

  • resonate

    resonate – luminale 2012

    resonate is an interactive light & sound installation for the light festival luminale 2012 in Frankfurt.
    The 40 meter long interior of a container ship in the centre of Frankfurt in Holbeinsteg becomes an interactive light and sound display. A glowing string structure is floating inside the steel hull and generates atmospheric sounds and images. With the help of digital LED light and sound the visitors experience this space as an interactive three-dimensional spatial composition.

    Transdisciplinary team
    The light and sound installation, “resonate,” is an interdisciplinary project between the Master students of the program “Interior Design- Spatial Communication” University of Applied Sciences Mainz and the Master program “Sound Art — Composition” Johannes Gutenberg University.     „Interactive Kölsch” ist eine interaktive Raum- und Lichtinstallation, die von den Studierenden des Masterstudiengangs „Kommunikation im Raum” der FH Mainz im Rahmen der Passagen 2011 für den ehemaligen Camouflageclub des Hotels Monte Christo entwickelt wurde. 1600 über den Computer ansteuerbare LED-Leuchten verwandelten den Keller zu einem phantastischen Raumerlebnis, das außerdem durch die Besucher und deren Kölschkonsum gesteuert werden konnte.

    hive, Luminale 2010

    “hive” is an interactive light installation in the form of a light swarm which apparently weightlessly hovered above the pond behind Frankfurt’s Old Opera, created by Interior Designers and Communication Designers of the FH Mainz as a transdisciplinary project for the light festival “Luminale” in April 2010. Via an interactive platform, visitors were able to communicate with the installation. The “Luminale” is one of the largest international festivals of light culture which takes place bi-annually to coincide with the world fair of light — Light + Building — in Frankfurt/Main. Award “Communication in Space”, Design award Rhineland-Palatinate 2010.

    Tetris, Luminale 2008

    Based on computer controlled LED technology, students of the department Interior Architecture developed a media façade for the university building Holzstrasse. This was realised within the framework of the Luminale 2008. The light installation consists of 200 LED lights, controlled via a computer programme and with a reflector specially developed for this purpose. The integration of digital media serves as an additional dimension of communication: the viewer communicates with the university, the university is drawing attention to itself within the city. While realising this project, and through interdisciplinary cooperation with the department of Media Design, the installation was complemented by the interactive computer game Tetris, in which the play counters are controlled from the opposite side of the road via a laser pointer via light sensors.
